The Void Yellow Dragon (황룡무상), 2022

The Hwangnyongsa Temple site in Gyeongju, Korea was built as the biggest temple in Asia in AD 553. After 700 years in 1238, the temple was burned by Mongolian’s invasion. Now few thousands of rocks and the vast empty land are remained as the traces of the history. Instead of dwelling on the glorious but unfortunate past, the space is created as a living and changing space with that remains.

These monumental but unidentifiable rock relics are transformed by the participants. The participants recreate these sculptures to rediscover the meaning of that remains. This conveys the Buddhist idea: void beings contain endless values.

700년동안 신라의 자랑이였던 경주 황룡사찰은 고려 고종 25년(1238)에 몽고의 침입으로 불에 타버리면서 그 존재의 가치를 잃어버렸다. 그 후, 이 빈터는 4만여 점의 유물들이 출토되면서 주출돌들만 남은 모습으로 남아있다. 이번 <황룡무상>은 화려했지만 안타까운 과거의 황룡사찰을 회상하는것에서 멈추는 것이 아니라, 사람들에 의해서 변화하는 “살아있는 공간”으로 전환하고자 하였다. 

지금 남아있지만 원래의 형상과 역할을 알 수 없는 기념비적인 석물들은 참여자에 의해서 변형, 발전되었으며, 이는 석물들의 의미와 가치를 재창조하였다. 이는 무상한것은 곧 무한한 가치를 갖는다는 불교의 “제행무상”의 긍정적 의미를 되새기기 위함이다.
